August 2010: What's Your Secret ? By now, many of you have read The Secret or seen the movie. Put aside all the buzz and you have an astoundingly simple concept: that each of us is the creator of our own reality. We attract things to ourselves. This is a radical idea ! And inherently damaging if it explains tragedy - do we actually draw unfortunate events and natural disasters to ourselves ? Of course not ! I don't think Rhonda Byrnes meant to imply that conclusion either. What she IS saying is that to a very great extent, our thoughts produce our actions, and our actions lead to outcomes. A positive mindset attracts a positive chain of events. A negative mindset attracts negative events. But remember, everyone in the world is creating at once ! So it stands to reason that the more humans as a whole focus on negative events, the more these negative events will manifest in the world. Far fewer people in the world focus on good news. It's just not human nature. We're a bunch of pessimists - stop it, already ! Thinking about something nice you'd like in your life, focusing your mental attention on it - without needing it - is the key. Buddha taught that the path to enlightenment is to let go of desire; desire only creates more suffering. What does that mean ? It means that by craving something, you create an attachment to it, and you're concentrating on your need for it because you lack it. If you continue thinking this way, you will continue to lack. And you will be obsessed with your lack, unable to enjoy life going on around you. Instead, be grateful for having the thing you quest. Picture yourself there already, at peace and content. Picture yourself having it already in your life. And thus you are able to let go of needing it because you already have it, in your mind. Then wait and see if it doesn't come to you ! I'll bet it will. I'd like to take a moment here to discuss semantics. Some people are uncomfortable with the word "manifest", like it's something mysterious. It's not. It's a process we use every day - when you cash your paycheck, write out a shopping list, go to the store and buy the bread and peanut butter to manifest a sandwich, for example. Now you may feel more comfortable enlisting the help of a higher Power to attract things. Some people pray. Some people meditate. Others cast spells. It's all the same process, just different approaches. The important thing is to find a method you're comfortable with, that seems natural to you. Your task here is to focus on a goal. The more details you include the better because it will become more real to you. For example, suppose you want a new pair of sneakers. Size 10, metallic blue. With air insoles. Get the picture ? (no pun intended) Visualize everything about your wish in as much detail as possible. Involve your emotions, feeling as good about it as you can ! Then let it go for now. Do the same again tomorrow. Repeat several times. The simplest goals seem to come the fastest, in my experience. I wanted to get an espresso machine once, but I couldn't afford one. I thought intensely about it, how great the coffee would taste, then went about my business that day not realizing what I had done. The very next day, a friend offered me her old one - free ! She'd gotten one for Christmas and was never going to use the darned thing. The key is intensity - FEEL intensely what it would be like to have something you want. The Universe has no sense of time, so the more strongly you feel something, the quicker it will appear. Your emotions must be engaged in your thought process for this to work ! Not only must you intellectually imagine all the details of your wish, you must experience the emotions, the joy and satisfaction of accomplishing your task. If you want to become a homeowner, think how happy, how safe and content you will feel in your own house, for example. Imagine the wallpaper pattern, the lamps, the couch. Live it in your mind. The same biochemical process is going on in your brain when you visualize something as when you are actually experiencing it. The Universe doesn't know the difference ! It takes practice, and I myself am just now learning how to do it after nearly a year. You can too ! The power of positive thinking is a decades-old concept people like Napoleon Hill and Norman Vincent Peale were writing about years ago. The concept is just as valid today, and we need it more than ever in the current "double-dip " recession economy the media is bombarding us with on a daily basis. Reject this ! A person will suddenly get an eerie sense of being watched while they are alone. Often, a nearby pet will perk up its ears and track an unseen presence with its eyes for minutes at a time. As the person moves about the room, they may even feel a presence behind them, turning around quickly to find no one there. They may attribute their unease to an attack of nerves, but the reactions of household pets would indicate otherwise. Who - or what - is watching these people ? And why ? We may speculate the "watchers" to be anything from space aliens to trans-dimensional beings or even government-sponsored remote viewers experimenting upon innocent citizens. In the absence of any known program or technology, what are ordinary people to make of this new development ? Is it confined to the United States, or is it a worldwide occurrence ? The most logical explanation in my opinion (ruling out paranoia, illness and extreme fatigue) is that our own government is conducting remote viewing experiments on its own citizens to see if they can sense an observer or otherwise monitor their activities. In this post-911 era of national security, this activity would not be out of the realm of possibility. But what if the phenomenon heralds something more sinister ? If indeed there are other dimensions that intersect with ours, it is logical to assume their inhabitants to be curious about beings inhabiting the adjoining parallel dimensions is it not ? Perhaps someone somewhere close by is conducting initial experimentation in contact by observing our reactions to being observed. If your feelings of being watched persist, try speaking out loud to the supposed visitor, letting them know you are aware of their presence. Also, keep a log of the dates and times you feel observed. True Story Winner When I was a child, I sometimes felt or saw things when I picked up other children's toys. My mom & I shopped at garage sales, thrift shops and rummage sales, where I would often pick up impressions. I didn"t understand it at the time, I just knew I felt happy or sad when I touched these items. Even when I visited museums, I would get feelings or impressions from standing near objects, especially around Egyptian artifacts. At the time, I attributed this to the creepy factor of being around long-dead mummies, but as an adult looking back on these experiences, I'm not so sure. Psychometry is the ability to pick up psychic impressions from objects that have belonged to people by simply touching or holding the objects. This technique is often used by psychics who assist the police. The psychic will touch a photograph of the victim or hold clothing worn by the victim to pick up on impressions of the crime scene. Objects record psychic or strong emotional impressions of their owners, but this is different from when an object is actually haunted. Spirits may occasionally attach themselves to an object and travel with it. This month's true story winner is SC from Taos, NM and her story ties in perfectly with our subject this month. After her husband's greatgrandmother's husband died a few years ago, the elderly lady wanted the couple to inventory the items she'd inherited from the late husband. Several items had belonged to his first wife, Duane Van Vechten of the original Taos Society of Artists. Van Vechten had studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and some of her belongings dated back to the 1930s. As S sorted the woman's things, she began to feel hot and cold, and felt as though someone were breathing on her. S was trying to sort through van Vechten's clothes mainly, but also some artwork. The woman's original studio has been preserved in the main house, and her outdoor studio as well, so there is quite a lot of the original ambience left at the residence. The lady was quite wealthy, used to her own way and was reputed to be a bit eccentric. She'd often lock herself away in her room to work, not seeing her husband for days at a time. We thank SC for this fascinating account of psychometry ! Joseph R. Buchanan, an American professor of physiology, coined the word "psychometry" in 1842. Buchanan constructed experiments by placing various drug compounds in glass vials and asking his students to identify the contents by touch. Their success rate was greater than chance and the results were published in Buchanan's book, Journal of Man. Buchanan had a theory that all objects possess "souls" that are capable of retaining a memory. Another American professor, William F. Denton, experimented with geological specimens wrapped in cloth in 1854. Denton's sister placed the wrapped items against her forehead and desribed the mental images she saw. A patient of the German doctor Gustav Pagenstecher exhibited unusual abilities between 1919-22. Placing herself in a trance state, she would describe facts about objects presented to her: sights, sounds, smells, both past and present. Pagenstecher theorized these "vibrations" had settled or condensed in the objects. Modern researchers have proposed that information about an object's past is recorded in the energy field surrounding it. According to this theory, the human aura is recorded onto nearby objects. We leave traces of energy patterns in or on the objects around us, items we have physical contact with on a regular basis - jewelry, cell phones, etc. This theory explains how psychics are able to pick up the last surroundings of a crime victim from the person's personal effects. Why not try experimenting with psychometry yourself ? When you're out, trying picking up random cues from doorknobs, shopping cart handles, anything someone has recently touched. See if you can get any emotional impressions, thoughts or mental pictures from the object that seem totally alien to your own life. You may pick up on a rushed mom hurrying through the grocery store before picking up her son from soccer practice, for example. Or an angry guy who just had an argument with his boss. All sorts of seemingly meaningless impressions may flash out at you, and at first you probably won't be able to make much sense out of it. But with practice, you may find yourself picking up on all sorts of cues and impressions from various items. Of course, you should always ask permission before trying to "read" someone's personal items, if at all possible. Try not to rationalize or construct a story in your head, but go with the first thing you sense from an object - a picture, an odor, a feeling, whatever comes into your mind. Sure enough, you get a phone call that they’re in the hospital. But it’s not always bad news ! You may just as easily send or receive good vibes. We are all telepathic, and all we need to do is to practice it. The next time you’re standing next to a friend in the break room at work, try sending him a telepathic command to twirl his coffee cup. Keep it simple and hold a picture of the action in your mind. See if he doesn’t turn that cup around ! It’s usually easy to tell if a communication you’re receiving is from a real person because it will suddenly occupy your thoughts, pushing your own aside momentarily. The communiqués may even keep happening, with an increasing sense of urgency if the sender’s need is great enough. Spirit messages however have an entirely different presentation. They are usually more subtle, and may begin as a small movement out of the corner of your eye. They may be associated with a particular room or object that makes you feel uneasy. All the hairs on the back of your neck may stand up for no apparent reason. But ghostly contact is not always uncomfortable. A dear, deceased loved one who was very loving and kind in life may present themselves with a wonderful feeling of calm and peace, much like reported visions of angelic beings. If the spirit has a specific message to communicate, she may influence other people to “coincidentally” find important documents or other items of legal proof. The spirit may use an alarm clock or computer to malfunction at a particular time of day when she passed, as a way of identifying herself to you. Or a particular odor of perfume, cologne or brand of cigarette that the person was fond of in life may be present. Anything unusual or out of the ordinary that this person knows you can identify with them may be used by the spirit to communicate. And the spirit will continue on their mission until they attract your attention. Often they are just saying “hello” in their own way, but sometimes they are enlisting your help to resolve some unfinished business. Pay attention to other clues that may present themselves. Spirits can be very persistent once they find a sensitive human subject. Of course, if you find the spirit contact disturbing, you have every right to refuse. Simply tell them (out loud if possible) in no uncertain terms to leave you alone, that you cannot help them. Don’t feel foolish either if you need the help of a medium or clergy to assist you. It’s your home ! Persistent telepathic intrusions from the living are a bit more difficult to contend with. Although most telepathic messages serve a purpose, and most are welcome or at least useful, you may occasionally be bothered by that toxic personality you just can’t stand to be around. The person most likely does not realize they are exuding a feeling of negativity and won’t know what you’re talking about if you mention it to them. Instead, mentally project a force field of peace and love around them – wish them well in your mind, mentally hug them and then let go, returning to your work. Repeat this exercise as often as needed, and see if their outlook doesn’t improve over the next few days. Some people are better transmitters than receivers. These people tend to dominate a work group or family unit, and their opinions often seem to hold sway even if they’re in the minority. Other people are better receivers, more sensitive to others’ moods and problems. By no means should anyone ever need to feel frightened or intimidated by either spirit or telepathic communications. We are each individual units with free will and you may simply block out external signals at any time you wish. Surround yourself mentally with a protective cloud or cloak until you feel grounded and calm again. Go off by yourself into nature awhile if you’re feeling pressured by others. Relax and experience the natural world until you feel ready to return to the human realm. Then you will be better prepared to communicate effectively on any level. Blessed be ! Mme. G ___________________________________________________ Where did the “New Age” go ? I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed. All those cool channelers, Reiki practitioners and psychics have disappeared, replaced by CPAs and reality show contestants. And my daughter’s Generation X is no help – they’re chasing vampires. So what’s a displaced non-denominational Neo Pagan to do ? I can’t even find a decent crystal shop in Sedona anymore ! Even cybercafés have been supplanted by national bookstore chains. Speaking of which, have you wandered down the “spiritual” aisle of your local bookseller lately ? Everything’s crowded together on one shelf, from Wicca and stones to Tarot decks and UFOs. Apparently I got in on the tail end of the New Age movement in the late 90’s. No one told me my spiritual path was a dead-end, my Feng Shui defunct. Well I don’t care ! I’m a nonconformist and I’m going to stay that way. If I want to sample various metaphysical menus, I will. Anybody with me ? You see, just because the metaphysical is not in fashion at the moment doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be curious. Are you going to leave all the hype to I have never believed it wise to put all your lingham eggs in one basket. And I’m definitely not going to let a bunch of fundamentalists (Christian or Muslim) send me running scared back to the rigid structure of organized religion, either. If anything, the events of 911 brought me closer to the Infinite, my faith renewed in mankind’s ability to transcend adversity and its own insanity. We need the breadth of perspective the world’s faiths such as Buddhism and Hinduism present. Personally, I believe any faith preaching tolerance ought to practice it, and let’s face it – Christianity has failed abysmally at several points in its history. I think that explains the appeal New Age concepts had for us Westerners, apart from the novelty of a different worldview on life. If I recall, us open-minded folks were often accused of letting our brains fall out. Au contraire ! You must first open your mind to allow it to expand further. You never stop learning, so use your mind all your life long to explore the unknown and unseen around you ! Our world is just too small for us to hide behind any one cultural or religious tradition. We can each of us learn from our neighbor, no one religion, creed or philosophy is “better” than another or has all the answers. Without cultural diversity, humanity will die out just as surely as it would without genetic diversity. We need to expose ourselves and our children to new ideas, new cultures, new ways to approach old problems. Maybe we are really going through growing pains as the human race, and this is our opportunity to meet the economic and ideological challenges on Earth as one people. I don’t believe the New Age is dead, it’s just experiencing an awkward adolescence, trying to find its place in the world. And it really IS a small world after all, the only one we’ve got ! Let’s honor and cherish it for our children’s children’s children. Let’s honor and cherish each other and our world’s spiritual traditions as well, because maybe we’ve been down this path before on an earlier Earth, who knows ? Maybe this time we’ll finally get it right. Mme. G What is psychic housekeeping ? Is it like dusting off your third eye ? No, silly ! Read on. Anytime you wish to use your psychic abilities, you must be mindful of external threats and interference. These may be a result of electromagnetic, environmental or intentional thoughts and can block your work. You’ve probably heard of shielding techniques, whereby you erect a mental force field to repel attack. But what form should it take ? The answer is whatever form you require and can easily picture in your mind. The easiest, quickest and most effective technique is to visualize a dome of outward-facing mirrors around you. This will serve to deflect any negative or evil intentions directed at you. It is always a good idea to begin your work by picturing a white light – pure and simple – gently surrounding you like a cloud. You may then add additional protection as needed. To protect from others draining away your psychic energy, mentally create a nonporous hard shell around yourself. Make it opaque or transparent, depending on whether you wish to be public in your work at the time. If you feel bombarded by problems of the world, simply imagine yourself surrounded by the soft, golden light of the Divine. This will energize you and allow the passage of only positive influences – in or out of your psychic workspace. Alright, now that you know how to protect yourself, what about your home and environment ? For these settings I like to use old-fashioned hoodoo and Native American methods. Did you know that washing floors also cleanses your home of stale and negative energy ? Use lemon or lemon balm-based cleaners to cut through greasy as well as psychic grime. Throw the dirty water out the door when finished. Sweep dirt out the front door. Smudge the air with cleansing sage or incense. For a spiritual aura, use sandalwood incense. To attract money, use frankincense or basil incense. And to keep out trouble and unwanted guests, sprinkle sea salt along your thresholds – every doorway and windowsill. Red brick dust at your front door or under your front porch is said to keep away the law. But be careful with this one ! You may need the police someday. To take psychic protection with you, carry a charged amulet or charm on your person. Begin with a ritual cleansing bath before you dress. There are a variety of charms and amulets you can purchase online or at your local crystal or herbal shop to protect yourself or to draw luck. You may also protect your vehicle or other belongings through the use of stones and crystals. Double-pointed quartz crystal is especially good at protecting your car if placed in the glove box or in a console. Do not disturb it except to clean and rinse it in sea salt and spring water monthly to “recharge” it. You may also hang a suitable charm from your rearview mirror, or a small bag of herbs. Runes or other symbols of protection are very powerful, perhaps because they are seldom called upon in our modern age. Try writing a symbol for protection or safety invisibly with your finger three times upon the hood of your vehicle. Walk around the car counterclockwise three times, writing the symbol on the hood as you pass by. You may chant a spell or prayer as you walk. A chant you have created yourself is strongest. Finally, a word of caution. If you use psi regularly, you may from time to time encounter a form of intelligence or espionage perpetrated by other practitioners. Not everyone is ethical, just because they purport to be “New Age” or “spiritual”. In the event of spying, it may be necessary to protect yourself by camouflage – projecting a mental image absolutely irrelevant to the work at hand. You may even have to enlist the aid of friends to project a mental counterattack ! Your enemies most likely are not even consciously aware of attacking you, but their subconscious jealousies may be manifesting as malicious thought forms. A little conscious repelling on your part is usually all that is needed to end the attack. Lastly, seal your fortress with an unconditional projection of love for your attacker. Mentally envision the golden Divine light enveloping them in healing forgiveness. Then let go. I hope this article has given you some ideas on how to protect yourself out there in the psychic realm. Later, when they compare their shared experience verbally, they find they were sharing the exact same thoughts at the exact same moment. This month’s story winner is VS from This may sound like a hokey ‘true story’ but it actually happened and blew me away. I was out with my best friend…[and] I said that I should stop….and pick up something for my boyfriend for dinner …We just walked into the store…and she sees a display for these Gyro meal kits with the meat, pita bread etc all included. She grabs one and says ‘this ! I bet he would like Gyros !’ Well, D. and I have known each other THREE YEARS and I have never seen him eat or want Gyros and I had never seen my friend want them either. So I just reply to her ‘you’re nuts, he would never eat those.’ So I get home and he is at the kitchen table EATING a Gyro. My jaw like drops and I say where the heck did you get that ?? ….Of course to this day he does not believe me about what happened at the store with E. But I will always believe that their minds were one that day ! This is a perfect example of telepathic communication between close friends, lovers or family members. Here we have an amusing story, but telepathic exchanges frequently occur during an emergency. “Woman’s intuition” informs a mother that her child is in danger while the child is separated from her sight, and has been observed for centuries. Twins are especially telepathic, and many documented cases exist of telepathic communication between twins miles apart. I ran a story a number of years ago sent in by a woman whose twin was killed in a tragic accident. She had awoken from a dream in which she saw what her sister was seeing as she crashed her motorcycle. When the phone rang later she was told her twin had been killed riding her motorcycle. You may have also heard of twins, adopted out to different families and raised separately, who just “knew” they were somehow incomplete. When introduced to each other years later, they discover they have similar tastes in clothing, occupations, etc. So what is the purpose of telepathy ? Proponents of UFOs will say the aliens are keeping tabs on us by invisibly watching us, observing us at close hand - but for what purpose ? Couldn't they just as easily, with their superior technology, implant electronic monitoring devices in our bodies ? In fact, UFO abductees have been claiming such implants for decades. This imminent sense of being personally observed by someone is an apparently new development.
January 2010: Spirit and Extrasensory Communication
Sometimes it seems like the cacophony of the modern world will overwhelm us. Text messages, emails, voicemails, advertisements – all are vying for our constant attention. That still small voice inside us is all but drowned out. Yet, in rare moments of quiet at the beginning (or end) of our day that nagging feeling that something is not quite right sneaks through. Maybe something a friend said has got you thinking about her. Maybe something you haven’t thought about in years pops into your head. These are not always stray thoughts however. Occasionally someone (or something) is trying to communicate with you ! We’ve all experienced thoughts we just can’t shake that precede a related event. A couple of years ago, for example, I just couldn’t stop thinking for several days about a certain group of high school buddies. A week later, one of them contacted me through a social networking website to say he’d been trying to locate me for some time.

Madame G suggests an old-fashioned approach: faith, hope & charity. That's right - core values of our country, no matter what your religion. Our great-grandparents lived through the Great Depression by working together as families, canning their own vegetables, helping out their neighbors, leaving pies cooling on windowsills for passing hobos, etc. The next generation, our grandparents, tightened their belts during WWII and rationed everything from gasoline and rubber to silk stockings so the Allies could beat the Nazis. America banded together in a patriotic show of strength. Rosie the Riveter worked the swing shift to put food on the table for her kids and build warplanes for Uncle Sam. People tightened their belts and worked together as a nation because we had to. And we did. We can do it again, folks ! Organize a potluck and invite your neighbors. Contribute to your local food pantry. Brown bag your lunch to work. Offer to swap services for a friend's "junk" you want. Think green and bike it to the corner store, bring your own shopping bags, use low-energy bulbs. There are hundreds of money-saving ideas out there ! Carpool. Hit the thrift stores. Google the blogs. OK, so you're doing everything you can think of to improve your financial situation. You've refinanced your mortgage, negotiated your credit card rates, started a 401(k). What else can you possibly do ? Cast spells ! Yup. Any witch worth her sea salt has always known the secret, the key to success. And what is it ? VISUALIZATION and CONFIDENCE. Know things are improving, feel the change, be happy ! When everyone else around you is depressed or being negative, the trick is to ignore them. That's right. Ignore the naysayers ! THINK positive. BE positive. Attract wealth and opportunities. Attract love into your life. Attract health. Attract abundance at all levels. Most importantly: FEEL grateful for what you have, instead of focusing on what you lack. Enjoy life ! Want more love ? Love those around you. Want more money ? Give to those around you. Want more health ? Eat healthy, grow your own food & give to the earth. To cast an Abundance Spell, get back to basics. Follow these steps: 1. Focus on your goal - see it unfolding in your mind. 2. Feel the outcome as if it has already happened. 3. Believe in your goal as already accomplished. 4. Assemble your materials - herbs, oils, candles, stones, etc. 5. Write your spell out thoughtfully, with feeling, focusing on your intent. 6. Invite Spirit to assist you in your prayer/spellwork. 7. Cast your spell, working confidently and in an unhurried manner. I started MadameGsTeaRoom.com in the summer of 2000 because my friends kept asking me to do my old-fashioned tea leaf readings for them; what started as a pleasant hobby soon evolved into an online e-zine ! I decided to go online and offer the only genuine tea leaf readings available on the Internet.
No birthdates, astrological signs or personal information are ever asked of you. Caring preparation is the most crucial stage of the reading - I don't just grab a deck and start pulling cards. Instead, I begin with a short meditation to focus on your situation before performing the reading. At Madame G's Tea Room you may rest assured that you are getting an intuitive reading from an actual psychic, not an operator on a phone line.
When ordering, please specify the type of reading you want - love, career, money, or general info. You may also ask a specific question. (For best results, please order no more than one reading per month on the same topic; one should not question Infinite wisdom by asking the same question too often - you need to allow time for events to play out in your life.)
These are not computer-generated "instant" readings. I perform a real old-fashioned reading - with actual tea or Tarot cards - for each client, so please allow 1-2 business days to receive your reading.

What is a psychic, and what is the paranormal ? I believe the human mind encompasses remarkable powers to transcend time and place, to reach out to other minds. Throughout history, people have demonstrated remarkable powers of ESP, telepathy, psychometry, telekinesis, clairvoyance, and so on. Many have seen ghosts, visions of the past, experienced visitations from spiritual figures and assistance from angelic beings.
